Every month, we will feature an interview on a sneakerhead from all around the world! Email us if you're interested!
KC: What's Up Bro? Start off by introducing yourself.
Darryl: Wassup…my name is Darryl, 19 years old from Jacksonville FL…Duval County
KC: Word, i grew up in Duval......How long have you been collecting though?
Darryl: Well…I’ve been into sneakers basically my whole life..I think the first retros I owned were the blk white and red 14s…I loved em. But I have been consistently collecting kicks since 09’..i was only 17 when I got into da game. but the first pair I actually went to the mall early and copped with my own cash was da military 4s from 2006.
KC: The black toe or white and red 14s? Either way I had both and they are dope. What pulled you into the “game”?
Darryl: The black toes….what pulled me into the “game” was just seeing these sneakers in store I loved em and I use to get money any legal way to get a pair and I took care of em, so it’s really just in me.
KC: That's whats up, what do you prefer jordans or nikes?
Darryl: Man that’s a hard question….I love all types of nikes… lol but I gotta roll with Jordans though.
KC: Haha I know it’s a tough one, just had to throw that out there. What would you say is your favorite Jordan Retro Number?
Darryl: My favorite retro is the Air Jordan 5…icey sole…3m tongue….i love 3m…the shoe is just so clean to me.
KC: Exactly, 5's are in my top 5 also, just a all around dope pair of kicks!.........What has been your favorite release so far (in all)?
Darryl: Well I can’t just name one but I gotta say the Bordeaux 7s and the Doernbecher 4’s that just recently released last year.
KC: Yeah DB 4s were hard to get especially with all that hype. One of the first releases i had to camp out for, what was that release like for you?
Darryl: It was crazy, I got mines through nike.com….i was on the site for a few hrs…I added them to the cart at midnight with 2 Mac computers up and the site crashed..i got kicked off a few times..then I got a site maintenance screen..i almost gave up on em but finally at about 1:45 my paypal came through for me and my transaction went through.
KC: Lucky, I was at a Niketown and still missed out, I ended up coppin' a few months later though.....Speaking of releases, What is your most memorable moment when it comes to a release?
Darryl: When it comes to a release my most memorable moment is waking up that morning and bein at the mall or wherever at 6-7 am…waiting for them and the fact that the managers know me there so it’s like they see me I’lll ask aye yall got my size back there right… which is a 7 and they will reply with…”Oh you already know you got yours”…nothing like knowing when it comes to a big release your back is covered.
KC: I hear that, I use to go to Jacksonville for a lot of releases and would get hooked up with multiple pairs. Now with your foot being so small do you ever have trouble getting certain releases?
Darryl: I use to cause I really didn’t have any resources….so now I rely on online sites….last 3 big releases I’ve gotten lucky so that’s how I get some of my limiteds…but GR releases I get em easy.
KC: You're pretty lucky with that small foot you get the best of both worlds lol....What would you say your collection is worth?
Darryl: My collection is pretty big for being only 19…You got dudes that have like may 100-200 pairs in there mid late 20s…I currently have about 74 pairs of sneakers at my age lol…but I would give it about 10 gs worth.
KC: With that being said, if someone offered you 10gs for your collection, would you sell?
Darryl: Naaa… lol I couldn’t…I feel like I worked to hard for my kicks so why get rid of em but some stuff if you come with the right price then yea (i would sell) but no I can work for 10 gs.
KC: Yeah im pretty much the same way, if someone offers the right price, i would sell.....It's been a minute since I been to Jacksonville, what is the sneaker game like now?
Darryl: I would have to say the sneaker game is pretty weak…we don’t have any exclusive shops or even a house of hoops…so I branched out to dese online releases and whenever I leave town I make sure I pick up something limited.
KC: I remember Ice Man Mr Kicks use to be the spot for limited releases but since that closed down, do you even have a chance at any of the limited releases or are you limited to general release only?
Darryl: Yea I do, I have to go online but im trying to network with people so I can maybe get some stuff shipped to me.
KC: That's cool, seems like nowadays it's easier that way..... With the "game" getting pretty crazy now, How long do you see this addiction lasting?
Darryl: I see no ending to this addiction….I’m in it for the love of the game so I don’t see myself stopping soon…always new ideas and new colorways of sneakers releasing…I can’t stop no time soon.
KC: Same here, I've been collecting so long i don't see myself stopping at all.....If you can have any sneaker in the world what would it be?
Darryl: If I could have any one sneaker in the world it would be the Air Jordan 5 “Tokyo”…..dopest sneaker I can think of…”
KC: I feel ya...the Tokyos are on my top cop list right now! Extra dope sneaker.....Anyways don't want to take up to much of your time is there anything you would like to say or any shout outs?
Darryl: I wanna give a shoutout to all da sneaker heads in Duval that’s in it for the love of the game….and shoutout to you and (beenhadthose.com) for giving me this opportunity…preciate it
..
